In this guide we describe how to use and install an Apple AirPort. We also get the top 10 troubleshooting tips. If you read this article, your AirPort can be used.

AirPort makes getting connected easy—without the wires. With AirPort, you can connect to the Internet, email, local servers, and shared printers without the hassle of being tethered to a short leash.

If you’ve got an AirPort card and access to a wireless network, regardless if it’s an AirPort network or something else, we show you how to connect your Mac to a wireless network and get online, as well as how to troubleshoot issues if you come across any.

Connecting to a Wireless Network Using AirPort

1 ) Open Internet Connect

Open Internet Connect in the Applications folder and click AirPort in the toolbar. If you don’t see the AirPort icon in the toolbar, you either don’t have an AirPort card installed or it hasn’t been installed correctly‚Äîfor instructions on installing an AirPort card.

2 ) Make Your Connection

If AirPort is turned off, click Turn AirPort On. Then choose your network from the Network pop-up menu. If you’re prompted for a password, enter it. If the network you want to join is not in the list, choose Other and then enter the network name and password. Then click Connect.

Tip: For faster access, select the “Show AirPort status in menu bar” checkbox in the AirPort pane of Internet Connect, which will allow you to select networks and turn AirPort on and off from an AirPort menu (the icon looks like a slice of circular pie).

Top 10 Troubleshooting Tips

1 ) Make Sure That AirPort is On

If you can’t make a connection, open Internet Connect in the Applications folder, click AirPort, and make sure that the dialog shows that AirPort is on. If it’s off, click Turn AirPort On. Alternatively, if you’ve opted to display the AirPort menu in your menu bar, click the AirPort menu icon and be sure that AirPort: On is displayed in the menu. If not, choose Turn AirPort On.

2 ) Check Your Physical Location

Being free from wires doesn’t mean that you can go anywhere and still get a connection. The maximum theoretical range of a wireless network is 150 feet, but range can vary based on your environment. If your connection seems spotty, make sure that there are no metal objects in the path between your computer and your base station or wireless access point. Try moving closer to your base station. Be aware that certain electrical items such as power lines, railroad tracks, and power stations, can cause communication interference‚Äîand try to avoid life situations that have you working behind concrete barriers or bullet-proof glass, both of which can impede your reception.

3 ) Check Your Access Privileges

If you enabled encryption on your network, make sure that you set up your base station or router properly, consult the documentation that came with your product, and that you’re using the correct settings and password. If you’re trying to connect to a wireless network that you didn’t set up and are having difficulty, the network may require a password to access it, it will ask for one if required. If you’re joining a closed network, a network with its name hidden, make sure that you’ve entered the network name and password correctly. If the network is secured by access control, make sure that your MAC address is registered with the network administrator‚Äîconsult the network administrator for assistance.

4 ) Make Sure That the AirPort Port Is On

If you can’t make a connection, make sure that your computer’s AirPort port is active. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences, then click Network. From the Show pop-up menu, choose Network Port Configurations (or Active Network Ports) and make sure that the AirPort checkbox is selected.

5 ) Restart Your Base Station or Wireless Router

Try restarting your base station or router by turning it off, waiting a few seconds, and then turning it back on. Or unplug the power cord, wait a few seconds, and then plug the cord back in. Then try connecting again.

6 ) Make Sure That Your AirPort Card Is Installed Correctly

If you installed an AirPort card into your computer but don’t see AirPort in the Network pane of System Preferences or in Internet Connect, you may not have installed it properly, although this doesn’t apply to computers that came with AirPort preinstalled. See the installation instructions that came with your card. To verify that your computer recognizes the card, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu and then click More Info to open System Profiler. You should see ‚ÄúAirPort Card‚Äù listed in the Contents list, either under Hardware or Network. If you don’t, shut down your computer and reinstall the card. If that doesn’t work, try installing another card.

7 ) Check for Other 2.4 GHz or 5.0 Ghz Electronics

If your wireless connection is intermittent, for example it works but may sometimes drop out, make sure that you’re not using other devices that use the same 2.4 or 5.0 GHz frequency ranges as AirPort technology. 2.4 GHz cordless phones, baby monitors, microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, and even some digital cameras can interrupt your connection, decrease performance, or decrease your AirPort signal range. Avoid using these types of devices when you need a continuous connection, such as when you’re downloading large files. If you can, place your computer and yourself somewhere with less interference.

8 ) Check for Firmware Updates

Check the manufacturer’s website for your base station or wireless router to see if there are any firmware updates available for your model. If so, download and install the software and try connecting again.

9 ) Verify That Your ISP is Working

If your Internet Service Provider’s (ISP) servers are down, you won’t be able to connect to the Internet. Make sure that this isn’t the actual problem‚Äîopen a web browser on any computer that’s directly connected (by wire) to a modem or network and make sure that you can connect. If not, wait for your service to be restored.

10 ) Restart Your Computer

Sometimes a simple restart can clear up issues. From the Apple menu, choose Restart and restart your computer. Once it’s finished starting up, try connecting to the network again.

The SMU (System Management Unit) is a microcontroller chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer. If your computer is experiencing any power issue, resetting the SMU may resolve it. The SMU controls several functions, including:

- Telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so on.
- Handling system resets from various commands.
- Controlling the fans.

Note that resetting the SMU does not reset the PRAM. Resetting the SMU will not resolve issues in which your computer is unresponsive‚Äîin these situations, restarting your computer will generally suffice. If your computer isn’t responding, perform these steps one at a time, in this order, until the issue has been resolved:

- Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape).
- Restart (Control-Command-Power).
- Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds).

Resetting the SMU can resolve some computer issues such as not starting up, not displaying video, sleep issues, fan noise issues, and so on. If your computer still exhibits these types of issues even after you’ve restarted the computer, try resetting the SMU. To reset the SMU on one of these iMacs:

1) Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.

2) Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.

3) Wait 10 seconds.

4) Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.

5) Let go of the power button.

6) Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.

The original iMac G5 model has a small button on the main logic board that will also reset the SMU, allowing you to reset the SMU easily if you have the back cover removed. The original iMac G5 will start up when pressing this button. This article applies to iMac G5 x.

This is the screen that we will fill out to tell Apple Mail how to connect to our email account.

Unlike most email clients, this will be in most cases the only information Apple Mail needs to connect to your email provider.

POP3 Email Account Setup: Email Credentials
We have pre-filled information from our server. It is standard, and your email provider is very likely to have the same requirements. See below for an explanation for each field.

NOTE: Apple Mail also supports IMAP email accounts. If you must use IMAP, simply select IMAP instead POP3. (IMAP and POP3 are email protocols, whose coverage is beyond the scope of the Apple Mail Tutorial.)

‚Ä¢ Full Name - This is how Apple Mail will display your name in emails you send out. Either a simple “Catherin”, or a more complete “Mrs. Smith”
‚Ä¢ Email Address - The email address is split in two by an “@” character: on its left comes the “user name”, and on its right the “domain”.
‚Ä¢ Incoming Mail Server - Most of the time, the mail server will simply be mail.YourDomain.com. If unsure, please check your email provider’s documentation.
• Account Type - The two most common email account types are POP3 and IMAP. Your email account is most probably POP3. As far as setting up Apple Mail, this difference is minor.
• User Name - The user name is what allows the mail server to know which mailbox your are trying to access. Most often, the user name is your complete email address; in some cases, it can be the before-the-@ part of your email address. In rare cases, your user name can be something completely different from your email address.
• Password - Use here the password you were assigned or chose; this allows the mail server to authenticate you, and ensure that you are authorized to access a given email account.
• Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - The outgoing mail server is generally the same as the incoming mail server. In some cases, it is of the form smtp.yourDomain.com.

Testing your new email account setup in Apple Mail
Once you have filled out all the information, click the Ok button, and apple mail try to establish a connection with your email server. If it generates any errors, check the spelling of the information you entered. If it is correct, call or email your email provider.

Setting Up the Establishing Shot

You’ll always need at least one “establishing shot” that indicates where your movie takes place. This is often a wide shot that introduces your main characters and shows where they’re situated. Sometimes this is the first shot in your movie.

Establishing shots can be very creative. Think about shooting from up high, over your head, or through a window. You can even begin by shooting a sign that shows where your movie takes place.

Framing Your Shots

Pay attention to how tightly you frame your subject. Consider, for example, how large a person or object appears in the picture frame. Wide shots, such as shots of an entire football field or an expansive landscape, help to establish a scene. Close-up shots bring you closer to the characters and usually occur after a wide shot has identified where your movie takes place.

Incorporating Medium Shots

When working with a handheld video camera, it’s common to shoot everything as a close-up. The LCD screen on your video camera is often so small that it makes your subject look boring unless you get in really tight.

Fight this urge and trust that when you see the video on your television or Mac, filling the entire screen with just a face will make your audience a little uncomfortable. The medium shot, showing two or more characters onscreen or one character from the waist up, is the kind of image viewers are used to seeing in TV shows and movies.

Recording Sound

As you start making movies, you’ll quickly discover that it’s more enjoyable to watch poor-quality video with great sound quality than high-quality video with terrible sound. You’ll also discover that most handheld video cameras use omnidirectional microphones. They record sounds from beside, behind, and in front of the camera, resulting in ambient noise that can be very distracting.

To create movies with better sound:

1. When shooting landscapes and establishing shots, you may not need to record the audio associated with the video you’re capturing. In such cases, mute the audio track and replace it with music, sound effects, or dialog recorded separately.

2. When videotaping someone speaking or when shooting a conversation between two or more people, zoom out completely so you can move the camera as close to your subjects as possible while still maintaining a medium shot (not a close-up).

3. Consider getting either an external microphone you can have your subjects speak into or a unidirectional shotgun microphone you can attach to your video camera.

In this post we will show you how to capture screen shots on your mac! In Mac OS X, you can use simple keyboard shortcuts to do all sorts of things, including capturing images of what’s on your Mac screen. For example, you can take a screen shot of your entire screen by holding down the Command and Shift keys and pressing a 3.

If you hold down the Command and Shift keys and press 4, Mac OS X turns the cursor into crosshairs you can use to select whatever portion of your display you’d like to capture in a screen shot. This is my favorite option!

If you immediately hit the Spacebar after typing Command-Shift-4, Mac OS X replaces those crosshairs with a little a camera. Using the camera, you can take a screen shot of the Dock, the entire menu bar, a single open menu, the desktop, or any open window.

Mac OS X Leopard automatically starts Mail (if the application’s not already open), creates a new email message, and places the selected web link in the body of the email document. All you have to do is enter the email addresses of your recipients, add a subject, and include a note about the web link.
